A free Base64 encoder and decoder that runs in your browser.
Welcome to About Opalify. Opalify is a simple website built around one useful job: converting data to and from Base64. You paste your text or add a file, and the result appears instantly. There is no account to create, nothing to install and nothing to pay.
About Opalify and what we build
Opalify provides a free Base64 encoder and decoder for everyday work. Developers, students, designers and curious users often need to turn text into Base64, read a Base64 value they received, or embed a small file as text. Our tool keeps that process clean and quick, so you can finish the task and move on.
The page works on phones, tablets and computers, and it offers a light and a dark appearance so it stays comfortable to read at any time of day.
What the Opalify tool can do
- Encode text to Base64 and decode Base64 back to the original text.
- Unicode support for languages such as Urdu, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese, as well as emoji and accented letters.
- Standard and URL-safe Base64, with an option to remove the padding characters.
- File encoding that turns a file into Base64 text, with an optional data URL.
- File decoding that turns Base64 back into a file you can download, with automatic file type detection when possible.
- Helpful messages that explain what is wrong when the Base64 you paste is not valid.
- Handy buttons to paste, clear, copy, download and swap input and output.
About Opalify and your privacy
Privacy is a core part of how Opalify works. The conversion happens locally in your browser, so the text and files you use are not uploaded to our servers. This matters because people often convert tokens, configuration values and private snippets. You can read the full details in our Privacy Policy.
A quick look at Base64
Base64 is a way to write binary data using only 64 safe characters: letters, numbers, plus and slash. Because these characters survive almost any text system, Base64 is used for email attachments, data URLs, small images inside web pages and values passed through APIs. Base64 makes data about one third larger, which is the price of making it safe to move around as plain text.
If you would like to read more, these trusted resources explain Base64 in detail:
- MDN Web Docs: Base64 glossary
- RFC 4648: the Base16, Base32 and Base64 data encodings
- Wikipedia: Base64 overview
Important: Base64 is not encryption
Base64 is an encoding, not a way to protect information. Anyone can decode a Base64 value without a password, so please never use it to hide passwords, private keys or other secrets. If you need real protection, use proper encryption. Our Disclaimer explains this and other limits of the tool in more detail.
Who is Opalify for?
Opalify is for anyone who works with Base64, whether you are a beginner or an expert. Students can use it to learn how encoding works by trying small examples. Web developers can check values from an API or build a data URL for a small image. Support teams can decode a value from a log file. In short, if you have ever wondered what a long string of letters and numbers ending in an equals sign means, About Opalify is the place to find a simple, free answer.
Our goals
- Keep the tool free, fast and easy to use without any sign-up.
- Respect your privacy by processing data on your own device.
- Give clear, friendly error messages instead of confusing technical ones.
- Keep improving the tool based on feedback from the people who use it.
